features the natural carapace mounted vertically upon a shaped pedestal base. The shell itself measures approximately 33.5"H x 26.5"W, displaying a rich, deep brown coloration with warm reddish-brown tonal variations and the the naturally defined geometric pattern of the individual scutes. The carapace is supported by a sculptural base with a tapered standard and broad rectangular foot. The metal has developed an attractive green verdigris patina, providing a contrast against the dark brown shell. The lamp is fitted with an electric cord. Turtle carapaces have a long history as objects of fascination and as materials in the decorative arts. Large intact carapaces were also collected as natural-history specimens.
In modern interiors, this piece would be eye-catching on a large console or credenza, where a vertical shell could replace conventional artwork above the furniture. It could also work beautifully in a library or study alongside leather, walnut, mahogany or antique brass. This unique lamp will complement Coastal, Old World, Tropical, British Colonial, Organic Modern or Eclectic interiors. See less
