Newly framed in pale oak with dark corner joinery detailing, this 1835 whale engraving sits deep-set behind an icy pale-blue archival mat with black core. The cool presentation sharpens the charcoal-toned marine imagery while setting off the warmth of the antique paper, giving the finished piece a clean, collected presence.
“Cetacea, Whale-Tribe” is an original hand-colored steel engraving from The Edinburgh Journal of Natural History and of the Physical Sciences, conducted by Scottish naturalist William MacGillivray (1796–1852). Depicting porpoise, whales, and narwhal among sailing vessels, rocky coastlines, and Arctic ice, it is mounted without adhesive using reversible conservation methods and works beautifully alone or within a natural-history gallery.
