Reclining chair, siesta medizinal designer: hans and wassily luckardt year: 1936 manufacturer: thonet, frankenberg country: germany measurements: h 111 cm w 95/165 cm d 66 cm material: solid beech wood, oiled, rivets iron, holder iron, adjusting screw iron, original neck pillow synthetic leather condition: good original condition special remarks: with few signs of wear.
the siesta medizinal was produced in small series at thonet in 1936, our copy bears the brand mark 43, probably for the year of manufacture 1943. By loosening the lever screw on the right-hand side and shifting your weight slightly backwards, the back and seat as well as the footrest folds upwards. The headrest has 3 adjustable positions via a locking system, depending on the height of the user. All parts are original, even the artificial leather of the neck rest!
as early as the late 1920s and early 1930s, roughly at the same time as the development of the 'chaise longue' by le cobusier, perriand and jeanneret, hans luckhardt developed so-called movement chairs (partly together with anton lorenz). He dealt with the medical problems of sitting and, based on this, developed test models at the thonet company, which ultimately led to the production of a series of 'siesta medizinal' deck chairs. The special and completely new thing about it was the mechanism, which enabled the synchronous adjustment of the support surfaces for the back, thighs and lower legs by means of a 'link gear' by simply shifting weight.
