An exceptional and beautifully executed French Art Nouveau bronze bust entitled Hérodïade (Herodias), signed by the French sculptor Charles Coudray (1864–1932). This striking and highly decorative sculpture embodies the elegance, romanticism, and artistic sophistication of the French Belle Époque, combining finely modelled naturalistic features with elaborate Orientalist ornamentation and a beautifully nuanced bronze patina.
The sculpture depicts Herodias, the biblical figure associated with the dramatic story of Salome and Saint John the Baptist. Herodias was a subject of considerable fascination among European artists and writers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly within the Symbolist and Art Nouveau movements. Her representation evokes themes of feminine beauty, regal authority, mystery, and intrigue, all of which are expressed through the sculptor's sensitive modelling and richly decorative composition.
Coudray presents Herodias as a beautiful young woman of noble bearing, her head turned slightly to one side and her expression composed, introspective, and enigmatic. Her delicately modelled face displays softly rounded cheeks, a finely shaped nose, full lips, and expressive, heavy-lidded eyes. The subtle downward direction of her gaze lends the figure an air of quiet contemplation, while the smooth, naturalistic modelling of the face contrasts beautifully with the elaborate decorative elements surrounding it.
Particularly impressive is the magnificent ornamental crown encircling her head, richly embellished with raised geometric designs, beadwork, and pendant ornaments. The central triangular motif rises prominently above the forehead, while carefully arranged decorative elements extend around the circumference of the headdress. The intricate surface treatment recalls the sumptuous jewellery and ceremonial adornments of ancient Eastern civilisations, reflecting the Orientalist influences that were particularly fashionable in French decorative art during the Belle Époque.
Her beautifully sculpted hair emerges beneath the crown in softly flowing locks, framing the face and falling gracefully around the ears. The gently undulating strands demonstrate the fluid, organic modelling associated with the Art Nouveau aesthetic.
The upper torso is elegantly draped in a classical garment, arranged in broad, overlapping folds that sweep diagonally across the shoulders and chest. The fabric is rendered with considerable depth and movement, creating an appealing interplay of flowing lines, pronounced ridges, and deeply recessed folds. The exposed neck and upper chest are smoothly modelled, emphasising the delicate contours of the female figure and providing a harmonious contrast to the richly textured drapery.
The bronze retains a particularly attractive rich brown patina with warm golden and subtly gilded-looking highlights, creating a beautiful variation of colour and texture throughout the composition. The face and hair display deeper reddish-brown and chocolate tones, while the crown, shoulders, and drapery reveal warmer bronze and golden hues. These contrasting finishes accentuate the sculptural details and lend the work a wonderful sense of depth, warmth, and visual richness.
The bust rests upon an integral, architecturally shaped bronze pedestal with stepped mouldings. The front of the base bears the title HÉRODIADE in prominent raised lettering, identifying the biblical subject. The bronze is also signed by the artist, Charles Coudray, an important feature confirming that the work bears the sculptor's signature rather than being merely attributed to him.
Charles Coudray (1864–1932) was a French sculptor whose artistic career spanned the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His sculptural work reflects the period's fascination with historical and allegorical subjects, expressive female figures, and the decorative possibilities of bronze. The present bust demonstrates these qualities through its refined facial modelling, elaborate ornamentation, and carefully balanced composition.
The sculpture is particularly representative of the artistic atmosphere of the Belle Époque, when French sculptors frequently combined academic traditions with the emerging decorative vocabulary of Art Nouveau. Its flowing contours, romantic subject matter, and richly ornamented headdress illustrate the period's appreciation for elegance, exoticism, and expressive craftsmanship.
A superb and highly decorative French Art Nouveau bronze bust of Herodias, signed Charles Coudray, distinguished by its exquisite facial modelling, elaborate jewelled crown, beautifully flowing drapery, and richly varied patination. An impressive example of French Belle Époque sculpture, offering both artistic sophistication and a commanding decorative presence, ideally suited to a distinguished collection of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century European bronzes.
