Based on the long, low-set ears, heavy jowls, pronounced brow and substantial muzzle, the dog appears most consistent with a Bloodhound or similar traditional scent hound.

The piece is beautifully modeled in heavy cast metal with its original cold-painted finish, giving the sculpture remarkable depth and personality. Particular attention has been paid to the folds around the face, drooping ears, soulful eyes and broad muzzle. Areas of age-related wear reveal warm metallic tones beneath the dark finish, creating the wonderfully timeworn patina collectors prize in early 20th-century animalier pieces.

Its substantial construction is immediately apparent in hand. The piece weighs approximately 2 pounds and measures 6.5 inches deep, 4 inches wide and 2.75 inches high. A mounting hole on the reverse also allows the piece to be hung on a wall, offering an alternative way to display its sculptural form. Good antique condition with some wear and small paint losses to surface. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.

More than simply a sculpture, this unusual piece was designed as a desk tidy and document or paper clip. The dimensional hound's head incorporates a mechanism for securing papers, making it an especially appealing accessory for a traditional writing desk, library, gentleman's study or English Country interior.

Both whimsical and sophisticated, this is the sort of unusual antique desk object that becomes an immediate conversation piece. The combination of animalier sculpture, functional design, considerable weight and beautifully aged cold-painted surface makes it particularly appealing for collectors of antique dog pieces, sporting and country-house accessories, or distinctive desk antiques.
