Introduction
With its elegant profile composition, rich bay horse and expansive park landscape, this late Victorian oil painting offers a particularly attractive example of British equestrian art.
Grant depicts an unidentified gentleman taking exercise on horseback, dressed in a black bowler riding hat, dark fitted riding coat, pale breeches and tall black boots.
The horse moves confidently across the foreground, its extended stride giving the composition a strong sense of movement. Grant has paid careful attention to the animal’s musculature, bridle, reins, saddle and tack.
Beyond the horse, long iron railings separate the prepared riding track from open grassland, distant buildings and mature trees.
The setting is believed to be Hyde Park, probably around Rotten Row, one of the locations most closely associated with fashionable equestrian life in Victorian London.

Design and Decorative Character
The horizontal composition makes the painting particularly suitable for placement above a console, sideboard, desk or fireplace.
Its palette combines warm bay and brown tones with soft greens, atmospheric blue-grey and restrained gilt from the frame.
The subject works naturally within traditional, English country house, equestrian, sporting and collected interiors while retaining sufficient restraint for more contemporary rooms.
The recently fitted gilt frame gives the work a finished architectural presence without being represented as original to the painting.
Hyde Park and John Grant
The proposed Hyde Park identification is supported by the broad prepared riding track, iron park railings, open grassland and metropolitan equestrian character of the scene.
Particularly relevant is another recorded John Grant painting, Carriage Drawn by Two Horses in Hyde Park, which is signed and dated 1887.
This demonstrates that Grant was painting equestrian subjects associated with Hyde Park during the same year as the present work.
The specific Hyde Park and Rotten Row identification nevertheless remains a reasoned scholarly interpretation rather than documented provenance.
The Rider and Horse
Although their identities remain unknown, Grant has portrayed both horse and rider with notable individuality.
The gentleman’s facial profile, black bowler riding hat, fitted coat, pale breeches, boots, gloves and crop are carefully recorded.
The bay horse receives equally close attention, particularly in its movement, musculature and tack.
This degree of specificity suggests the possibility of a commissioned equestrian portrait of a particular gentleman and horse, although no documentary identification is presently proposed.
