Measuring approximately 80 inches long and 55 inches high, this substantial sculptural piece makes an extraordinary statement.
The lion is modeled in a striding pose with a dramatically carved golden mane, expressive painted face and an elaborate saddle rendered in vibrant turquoise, magenta, lavender, blue and silver tones. Ornamental scrollwork, tassels and layered saddle details give the piece the exuberant decorative quality associated with traditional carousel and carnival figures.
The painted surface has acquired considerable patina, including areas of cracking, flaking, paint loss, rubbing and exposed underlying material. Particularly noticeable losses occur around the face and muzzle. These imperfections are visible in the photographs and contribute to its wonderfully timeworn, folk-art character. It has not been restored to look new.
Approximate dimensions:
80" L × 55" H × 16" W
An exceptional decorative object for an eclectic or maximalist interior, large entryway, loft, gallery, retail environment, entertainment space or serious collection of carnival and carousel art. Its scale, sculptural form and fantastic color make it equally compelling as furniture-adjacent décor or a freestanding work of folk art.
Condition: Vintage condition with substantial age-related surface wear, including paint loss, flaking, cracking, scuffs, abrasions and areas of exposed substrate. Please review all photographs closely for condition and surface detail. Structurally impressive and sold with its existing aged finish and patina.
