Three theatrical portraits, three celebrated masters of the Utagawa school, one dramatic wall. This collection of Edo-period ukiyo-e woodblock prints captures kabuki at the height of its popularity, when audiences collected actor portraits the way we now collect film stills.
On the left, the onnagata Iwai Kumesaburō appears in a female role, sheltered beneath a striped parasol as a flock of geese crosses the sky above a temple precinct. Signed Toyokuni. In the center, Sawamura Gennosuke stands in a defiant warrior's stance, his black robe swirling with graphic white waves against a rushing stream and windswept reeds. Signed Kunisada. On the right, the great Ichikawa Danjūrō, the most prestigious name in kabuki, glowers in bold checkerboard armor beneath towering pines, swords at the ready. Signed Kuniyasu, with a censor's seal near the signature.
The deep indigo, soft blush, and gray-blue palette has mellowed beautifully with age, and the bold black masses and calligraphic linework make a striking contrast against the warm silk-textured mat. Presented in a slim black frame under glass, the group is ready to hang as a horizontal statement piece over a console, sideboard, or bed. It pairs especially well with chinoiserie, faux bamboo, and traditional or modern interiors.
