Its polished black surface carries large, unfurling spirals filled with fine feathered hatching, like fiddlehead ferns caught mid-curl. Between them run stepped geometric bands and scattered leaf and circle motifs, all etched by hand and glowing as matte lines against the glossy ground.

The olla form and the intricate etched decoration reflect the Mata Ortiz tradition, a pottery revival rooted in the ancient Casas Grandes potters of northern Mexico. At 11" in diameter and 8" tall, it has the presence of a true collector's piece. It looks equally striking alone on a console or table, or with a single branch of dried stems rising from its short collar neck.
