This is a set of twelve Louis XV-style dining chairs by Karges: two armchairs and ten side chairs. Each chair has a hand-carved frame with shell crests, a shell-and-acanthus carved apron, and acanthus-carved cabriole legs ending in scrolled feet, all in a warm, hand-rubbed walnut finish. The seats and backs are upholstered in the original silk or silk-blend satin with a woven Napoleonic bee motif. The fabric shifts from soft peach to pale gold depending on the light and viewing angle.
Karges has been making furniture in Evansville, Indiana, since 1886 and is known as one of America's finest makers of French and English period-style furniture. Each piece is hand-carved and hand-finished through a multi-step process, and Karges seating was sold through high-end showrooms and interior designers.
Exact age is unknown, though the label style suggests 1960's construction.

The upholstery remains serviceable on most of the chairs, though some show minor to moderate fraying at the seat corners (see picture for worst one) and a few side chairs have water marks (see picture). One armchair has two large rips on the front of the seat, and both armchairs have rips along the top of the outside back panel. Apart from the armchairs, the set presents very well. Reupholstering just the two armchairs in a contrasting fabric would create a striking host-and-hostess pairing while the ten side chairs could remain in use as they are. less
