The tall back is surmounted by an ornate carved crest incorporating fantastical winged griffin/dragon-like figures surrounding a central shield-form cartouche. Carved lion-form terminals flank the back, while the sweeping arms terminate in additional sculptural animal heads. The rocker sides are particularly striking, with deeply carved openwork scrolls, foliage and architectural ornament extending into the curved runners.
The chair retains dark brown embossed upholstery on the seat and back, secured with decorative nailhead trim. Its deep, nearly ebonized finish emphasizes the dimensional carving and gives the chair a wonderfully dramatic presence.
