A matched set of ten antique French Limoges porcelain cabinet plates, each individually hand-painted with a different orchid specimen and identified by its botanical name on the reverse.
Produced by Tressemanes & Vogt in Limoges, France, circa 1895, the plates were retailed by Ovington Bros. of New York. Each orchid study is surrounded by a delicate gilt bead-and-swag band and a broad, intricately patterned gold border.
The botanical decoration is artist signed, with the cursive signature appearing to read “Mage,” also catalogued elsewhere as “Magy.” Each reverse bears the green T&V Limoges France factory mark, the red Ovington Bros. New-York retailer’s mark, and the handwritten orchid name.
The ten botanical titles are Stanhopea Martiana, Lycaste Skinneri, Cattleya Exoniensis, Epidendrum Fincarifolium, Oncidium Krameri, Cattleya Gigas, Epidendrum Varicosum, Epidendrum Rubescens, Phalaenopsis Stuartiana, and Dendrobium Farmeri. Names are reproduced as inscribed on the plates.
Offered together as a set of ten. Each plate measures approximately 9.25 inches in diameter by 1.125 inches high.
Excellent antique condition overall, with vivid hand-painted decoration and well-preserved gilding. One plate has a tiny, shallow chip on the underside edge that is not visible from the front. Please see the close-up photograph.
