Signed hand-blown art glass vase by American glass artist Peet Robison (1946-2012), circa 1990s. The softly shouldered form is worked in an atmospheric palette graduating from luminous blue at the neck through silvery opalescence to rose and mauve near the base.
Across the surface, deep ultramarine blue and aubergine glass forms an expressive branching, almost calligraphic landscape, with fine turquoise-green lines rising from the base like grasses, reeds, or slender trees. The decoration shifts considerably with the light, revealing flashes of blue, green, violet, gold, mauve and pink beneath an iridescent surface.
The vase closely relates to Robison’s documented “Sunset” and “Sunset Landscape” works of the late 1990s, with the same atmospheric gradation of rose, blue and iridescent color beneath abstract tree and landscape motifs.
Robison's landscape glass is particularly appealing for the way it moves between representation and abstraction; here, the branching decoration has an organic, almost Art Nouveau quality while remaining distinctly contemporary studio glass.
Robison was part of the very early American studio-glass movement. While at Kansas City Art Institute, he was invited by Dale Chihuly to participate in the experimental glass workshop that became Pilchuck Glass School; in 1972 he also worked with Chihuly and Dan Dailey at RISD and returned to Pilchuck as a teaching assistant.
Hand blown and signed Peet Robison on the underside, with an additional inscribed number. The number appears to read approximately “2060” or “206” and is presented as an identifying/work number rather than a date.
