Its most remarkable feature is the door itself: one continuous pane of curved antique rolled glass, handcrafted and set within a slender metal frame, a rare achievement for its day and a true treasure for the collector. A spindle gallery punctuated by turned urn finials crowns the boldly molded cornice, while fluted pilasters frame the glazed upper cabinet.
Inside, a full quarter round glass shelf joins two sconce style glass shelves on finely scrolled brackets, creating an enchanting stage for silver, porcelain, or a cherished collection. Below, drawers follow the sweep of the case, and twin doors with raised panels in molded frames open to an adjustable shelf, all flanked by columns rising to acanthus leaf capitals. A multi tiered base wraps the entire piece and rests on three large bun feet. Shaping oak to a continuous curve, from the bowed case and moldings to the curved door panels, demanded exceptional skill from the cabinetmaker.
Created during the 1870s, when French artisans were reviving and reinterpreting the great styles of their nation's past, the vitrine reflects a glorious period of French furniture making that celebrated architectural ornament and exacting craftsmanship in equal measure.
Placed in the corner of a dining room, library, or salon, it brings height and architectural presence to a space often left empty, and soft interior lighting will make the curved glass glow.
