Antique Harrach Carneol (Marmoriertes) Marbled Art Glass Bottle Vase with Gilt Enamel Neck, Circa 1888-1900
A superb antique Bohemian art glass bottle vase attributed to Harrach, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1888-1900. This striking example showcases the famed Carneol (Marmoriertes) décor, a highly sought-after decorative technique developed to imitate the appearance of natural semi-precious stones.
Harrach and Loetz were leading competitors during the Art Nouveau era and often employed similar marbling techniques during the 1890s. Because both firms rarely signed their everyday artistic production, examples from this distinctive series are frequently cross-attributed by collectors and auction houses as either Harrach or Loetz.
The vase features a graceful bottle form with a bulbous body executed in richly colored, multi-layered cased glass. Swirling oxblood and carnelian-red tones intermingle with deep smoky maroon veining, while wisps of opalescent white marbleization emerge beneath the glossy polished surface. The result is an exceptionally convincing stone-like effect with remarkable depth and movement.
The tall cylindrical neck is lavishly decorated with an intricate hand-applied gilt enamel pattern composed of interconnected oval and circular "bubble" motifs, reminiscent of Arabesque or cellular designs. Harrach was renowned for its masterful enamel decoration and gold-overlay work, and this vase beautifully demonstrates that expertise.
Additional details include a gilt-decorated rim and matching gilded disk foot. The interior of the neck reveals a milky opalescent glass lining beneath the translucent ruby-red exterior, further showcasing the sophisticated craftsmanship of the period.
