The burr walnut swirls and clusters into patterns that no two drawers repeat, and the warm, honey-to-chestnut tone has deepened with age. A fine line of banding follows the edge of the top, brass bat-wing pulls and keyhole plates sit on each of the three drawers, and turned bun feet lift the chest off the floor. Walnut chests of drawers in this form were made in England in the first half of the 1700s.

At 41 inches wide, 20 inches deep and 35 inches tall, this antique English chest of drawers has the scale to work in a bedroom, an entry or a dining room. The top holds a lamp, a vase or a mirror, and the three full-width drawers hold linens and clothing. The figure in the walnut is the main decoration, so a few simple objects on top are enough.
