A charming antique hand-worked needlepoint depicting a three-figure pastoral scene surrounded by an exceptionally attractive floral garland, presented in a substantial mahogany-toned wood frame with a gilt-toned inner liner.
The needlework features a central group of traditionally dressed figures surrounded by an abundant border of roses and other colorful flowers in muted shades of rose, pink, cream, blue, green and burgundy. The detailed hand stitching and softly aged palette give the piece the warmth and character of antique European decorative needlework.
The subject was identified in a January 1990 appraisal as a “Jacob’s Coat” scene, referring to the biblical story associated with Jacob and Joseph’s coat of many colors. The identification is retained here as part of the piece's documented appraisal history.
Particularly noteworthy is the original framing label affixed to the reverse identifying William Haines, Artistic Picture Framing, 895 Yonge St., Toronto 5. The William Haines framing business is independently documented in Canadian institutional records, making the original label an interesting element of the object's history.
The needlepoint is housed behind glass in a handsome multi-stepped mahogany-toned frame with a gilt-toned inner liner. The frame provides a refined presentation suitable for a traditional, collected or eclectic interior.
A particularly appealing piece for collectors of antique needlework, Victorian decorative arts, or unusual framed textile art.

The needlepoint displays some waviness/irregularity to the canvas, tonal variation and areas of age-related discoloration/fading. The original paper backing is deteriorated, consistent with age, and the original William Haines label remains attached to the reverse. The frame is structurally sound with minor age-related wear to the finish and gilt-toned liner. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. less
