Soviet Mstyora Firebird Lacquer Box Signed by V. Snyatkov, circa 1980
Large Soviet Russian Mstyora lacquer box depicting the Firebird, hand-painted and signed by V. Snyatkov, circa 1980. The square papier-mâché box has a black lacquered exterior, a vivid red lacquered interior, and a hinged cover decorated with an extensive miniature landscape.
The scene is identified by the Russian inscription “Жар-птица,” translating as “The Firebird.” A young hero stands beside a fruiting apple tree while the radiant bird flies above a village landscape. The apple tree refers to the Firebird’s nocturnal theft of precious apples, the event that initiates the hero’s quest in Russian folklore.
The Firebird represents beauty, illumination, transformation, and destiny. Possessing one of its glowing feathers promises wonder and good fortune, but pursuing the bird leads to danger, trials, and unexpected consequences. It therefore serves as both an elusive object of desire and a catalyst for heroic adventure.
The inscriptions along the lower edge read “Мстёра,” identifying the Mstyora school; “Жар-птица,” naming the subject; and “Снятков В.,” the signature of V. Snyatkov. The underside is inscribed “Handpainted in USSR,” securely dating the box before 1991.
Mstyora developed as a center of lacquer miniature painting after the Russian Revolution, when artists transferred techniques derived from regional icon painting to secular papier-mâché objects. This example was formed from laminated and compressed papier-mâché, primed and coated with black and red lacquer. The miniature was executed in finely layered egg tempera with linear highlights and metallic-gold details, then sealed beneath clear lacquer and polished.
The box retains its Marshall Field & Company envelope, informational brochure titled “The Story of Russian Lacquer Miniature Painting,” and handwritten Mother’s Day presentation card reading, “Memories of old Russia—with love on Mother’s Day.” These materials document its original American retail and ownership history.
