Flowering branches rise across both door panels in relief, each leaf and blossom standing out against a darker recessed ground. The reddish-brown finish has deepened with age, and the mitered frame of the top and the shaped apron keep the lines calm so the carving carries the piece. A brass latch closes the doors, and a single shelf sits inside. Small carved cabinets like this were made in China for household storage.

At 30 inches wide, 18.5 inches deep and 28.5 inches tall, this antique Chinese cabinet is easy to place. It suits a bedside, the end of a sofa or an entry, with a lamp or a vase on top and a shelf behind the doors for things you would rather keep out of sight. The carved panels give a plain room a point of detail up close.
