In Theravada Buddhist tradition, families used these spired vessels to carry food and fruit to the local monastery as a daily act of merit. This example has the classic tiered, stupa-shaped finial lid, a baluster stem and a wide ring foot, with its original fitted tiers intact. The lacquer has a soft, time-worn luster with natural craquelure and minor wear consistent with ritual use, all shown in the photos. It was acquired from Honeychurch Antiques on Hollywood Road in Hong Kong and shipped to the United States. At 27 inches tall, it makes a sculptural focal point on an entry console, in a lit alcove or on the floor beside a low sideboard. It measures 14 inches wide by 14 inches deep by 27 inches high.
