A scrolling floral design in sage green and rose spirals out from the center and travels around the shoulder of the piece, the kind of unselfconscious folk decoration that makes a utilitarian object feel like a keepsake.

A brass screw top with a metal loop handle sits in a recessed collar at the center and is stamped with the Hailo mark. Hailo-Werk of Haiger, Germany, was founded in 1947, and bed hot water bottles were among its first products. Once tucked between cold sheets on a winter night, today this is a lovely sculptural object for a bedside table, hearth, or shelf, and it looks wonderful propped on a stack of cream wool throws.

Condition: lovingly used, as a warmer should be. There is honest paint wear along the edges and shoulder, with soft areas of loss revealing the grey metal beneath, most notably a larger worn patch on the underside, and a few small nicks to the surface. The brass screw top has a rich, aged patina. Sold as a decorative piece; not tested for use as a hot water vessel.
