Handsome early-20th-century quarter-sawn oak desk by King Mantel & Furniture Co. of Knoxville, Tennessee, retaining its original maker’s label on the reverse.
The desk features beautifully figured oak with prominent tiger-stripe / quarter-sawn grain, a gently shaped top with molded edge, and two broad drawers with original-style wooden knobs and key escutcheons. The case is supported by slender shaped legs joined by a long lower stretcher shelf, giving the piece an elegant, open profile while adding useful display space below.
The restrained curves, warm oak finish and highly figured grain give the desk a sophisticated Arts & Crafts–to–Colonial Revival character typical of fine American furniture from the early 20th century.
King Mantel & Furniture Co. was an established Knoxville manufacturer active during this period; the company appears in early-1920s trade references, supporting a circa 1920s date for this piece.
