Executed in wood with a warm honey-brown finish, the table has a compact architectural form with a raised upper compartment, single drawer, and elevated four-legged base. The drawer front is embellished with expressive incised and raised decoration depicting a fanciful bird, botanical forms, and other whimsical naturalistic motifs. The freehand quality of the decoration gives the piece an especially appealing folk-art character, while the restrained geometric construction reflects the Danish cabinetmaking tradition of the period. The surface has acquired a beautifully aged patina, with visible craquelure, minor losses, abrasions, and other signs of age that contribute to its authentic character. The combination of sophisticated Danish woodworking and naïve decorative imagery makes this a particularly distinctive accent piece for an eclectic, Scandinavian, or modern interior. See less
