Rare and highly decorative italian mid-century vanity or dressing table, strongly attributed to eugenia alberti reggio and rinaldo scaioli, produced in the context of the consorzio esposizione mobili cantù, circa 1959.
the piece bears its original consorzio esposizione mobili cantù paper label and displays the refined, experimental vocabulary associated with the most progressive cantù production of the late 1950s: an organically shaped top, slender white-lacquered metal legs, adjustable gilt-brass feet, a sculptural lower shelf, and an elegant upper surface in antique-gold colored glass framed by a gilt metal border.
dimensions: w 100 × d 45 × h 77 cm.
one of the most distinctive qualities of this piece is its ability to be presented in two completely different configurations, both visually convincing and historically coherent.
in its original dressed configuration, the vanity is fitted with its removable textile skirt suspended from the original sliding hooks beneath the top, together with the matching upper valance. In this form, the piece has the refined and intimate character of a luxury 1950s dressing table, combining furniture design with textile decoration in a manner typical of elegant italian bedroom interiors of the period.
in its undressed configuration, the textiles can be removed entirely, revealing the light architectural structure of the table. The slender metal supports, sculptural lower shelf and organically shaped gold-glass top give the piece a distinctly more modern and graphic appearance. Placed against a wall beneath a large mirror, it functions beautifully as a contemporary vanity, dressing console or decorative entry table.
this dual presentation is particularly appealing today: the same piece can retain its complete period character or be transformed into a much more minimal and modern interior element without altering the original structure.
the contrast between the white lacquered frame, warm gilt-brass details and antique-gold glass gives the vanity an unusually sophisticated presence. The adjustable brass feet and articulated system of textile hooks also reveal a level of technical refinement that goes beyond purely decorative furniture.
the design shows strong affinities with documented furniture created by eugenia alberti reggio and rinaldo scaioli for the consorzio esposizione mobili cantù around 1959, particularly in the use of painted metal structures, brass details and light, experimental forms associated with the period of the mostra selettiva del mobile di cantù. For this reason, the present piece is offered with a strong attribution to alberti reggio and scaioli, while further archival research is ongoing.
an elegant and unusual example of late-1950s italian design, combining functionality, decorative sophistication and remarkable versatility.
