Beautifully presented in a black frame under glass, with broad white matting and a narrow black perimeter that visually extends the frame, this original 1696 hand-colored engraving depicts flowering raspberry (Rubus odoratus). Soft rose blooms, deep green foliage, and the wonderfully theatrical landscape setting give the early botanical decorative presence while preserving the character of the original paper and hand color.
The subject appears in the posthumous 1696 edition of Abraham Munting’s (1626–1683) Naauwkeurige Beschryving der Aardgewassen, published in Leiden by Pieter van der Aa. This pre-Linnaean botanical work grew from years of cultivation and observation, describing plants through their characteristics, propagation, cultivation, and medicinal uses.
