Tempera on board

A charming and characterful still life composition executed in tempera on board and dated 1977, by the established Swedish artist Eric Cederberg (1897-1984), whose artworks have been represented in several public and museum collections across Sweden.

Small yet very effective in its composition, this still life presents a carefully arranged tabletop composition of everyday objects. A dark earthenware jug, a pale turquoise vase filled with delicate lily of the valley, and three ripe pears are set against a rich crimson tablecloth and a deep, shadowed background. The artist transforms these humble domestic objects into a balanced and quietly contemplative composition, celebrating the beauty found in simplicity.

Painted in a distinctly mid-century modern style, the work embraces flattened perspective and bold, simplified forms rather than strict realism. Each object is reduced to its essential silhouette, creating a harmonious interplay of shape, colour, and negative space.

The palette is warm and restrained, combining deep burgundy reds, earthy browns, olive and sage greens, and soft pear yellows with the striking contrast of the cool turquoise vase. The crisp white blossoms of the lily of the valley provide a fresh focal point, while the dark background enhances the luminous quality of the objects and intensifies the richness of the colours.

Brushstrokes are smooth and deliberate, with paint applied in opaque, even layers that create broad areas of flat colour. Subtle tonal variations gently model the forms without sacrificing the painting’s graphic simplicity, while clean outlines and confident edges reinforce its decorative, modernist character.

This tempera on board is presented in a complementary wood frame with an inner linen lining. Both the painting and frame are is in excellent vintage condition. Please note that is some glare present in the photographs.
