THE WINDOW SEAT
Oil on board
Size: 16.3 x 13 inches (including frame)
A compelling mid-century figurative work depicting a seated figure beside a window, rendered with a wonderful balance of abstraction and recognisable form, executed in oil onto board and dated 1961.
The sitter is reduced to broad, loosely defined shapes, with facial features largely omitted, allowing posture, colour and composition to carry the scene. A deep green form in the foreground – suggestive of a draped furnishing – adds a strong geometric counterpoint to the softer figure.
The painting has a distinctly modernist, semi-abstract quality, with the artist simplifying the interior into overlapping planes of colour rather than describing the setting literally. The luminous window behind the figure introduces a sense of light and depth, while the cropped composition gives the work an intimate, almost observational character.
The palette is beautifully restrained and earthy, combining warm cream, stone, muted brown and soft grey with touches of olive and forest green. Pale buttery yellows around the window bring warmth and illumination to the otherwise subdued palette, while darker brown and charcoal passages provide structure and contrast.
Paint is applied with loose, expressive and highly visible brushwork, with areas of dry-brushing, scraping and layered pigment creating a wonderfully tactile surface. Broad directional strokes construct the figure and surrounding interior, while passages of exposed and broken colour give the work an appealing immediacy.
This oil on board is presented in a beautiful layered wood frame featuring a warm gilt inner border, textured linen slip and grey-toned outer moulding. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
