Oil on board

An atmospheric and expressive mid-century figurative landscape depicting two figures strolling through a gently curving pathway, executed in oil onto board.

The path sweeps through the composition and disappears into the distance, creating a pleasing sense of depth and movement. The two figures provide a subtle human presence within the expansive landscape, giving the scene an intimate quality.

Painted in a distinctly modernist style, the landscape is simplified into broad, softly defined forms. Rather than focusing on precise detail, the artist uses shape, colour and tonal contrast to suggest the surrounding landscape, giving the work an expressive and slightly abstracted character.

The palette is particularly attractive, dominated by turquoise, teal, blue and fresh green, with deeper blue-green and olive tones providing contrast. The clear blue sky lends the painting a lightness, while small touches of muted mauve and green articulate the two figures.

Brushwork is loose, broad and expressive, with visible strokes and areas of blended colour creating a wonderfully painterly surface. The sweeping curve of the pathway is particularly effective, naturally guiding the eye from the foreground towards the distant landscape.

This oil on board is presented in a beautiful wood frame with a layered profile. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
