A striking vintage Chinese armchair crafted in a richly toned dark hardwood and extensively decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay, carved openwork, floral motifs, birds, butterflies, and traditional Chinese longevity symbols.
The chair features an unusually sculptural silhouette, beginning with a dramatic pierced crest and flowing curved back supports surrounding a large oval back medallion. The medallion is beautifully inlaid with an elaborate garden scene depicting flowering branches, foliage, birds, rocks, and botanical imagery rendered in shimmering mother-of-pearl.
Additional iridescent inlay decorates the broad arms, seat rail, legs, and surrounding frame, catching tones of green, pink, gold, and blue depending on the light. The scrolling open arms are especially impressive, with large carved circular flourishes that give the chair a strong architectural presence.
Traditional shou longevity medallions appear beneath the back panel and along the carved apron, reinforcing the chair’s distinctly Chinese decorative vocabulary. The shaped legs, pierced apron, and carved crest further contribute to its highly ornamental presentation.
The solid wood seat retains additional mother-of-pearl decoration along the front edge, while the dark reddish-brown finish provides a dramatic backdrop for the colorful inlay.
