Each plate is individually hand-painted with a different naturalistic rose specimen in shades ranging from delicate blush pink and yellow to deep crimson and burgundy. The floral compositions are surrounded by richly textured raised metallic leaves and botanical elements in gold and platinum/silver-tone decoration, with additional hand-decorated insects and butterflies. Fine gilt rims complete the design.

The variation from plate to plate is intentional, creating a coordinated botanical collection in which each plate is a unique work of decorative art.

The reverse bears the puce MINTONS crowned-globe factory mark, hand-painted G4419 pattern number, impressed MINTONS mark and an impressed Minton year cypher corresponding to 1880.

This type of Minton production is associated with the English Aesthetic Movement of the late 19th century and is substantially more elaborate than conventional Minton dinnerware.

A closely comparable set of 12 nineteenth-century Minton hand-painted rose cabinet/dessert plates with naturalistically painted roses, insects and butterflies and raised-paste gold and platinum decoration is documented by 1stDibs as sold for $6,200. Those plates measure 9" diameter and were dated to the 1880s. 1stDibs

Current 1880 Minton Aesthetic Movement plates featuring similarly elaborate hand-painted fruit, insects and raised gold/silver-tone botanical decoration are being offered individually in the approximately $1,500–$1,750+ range, further demonstrating the distinction between these artistic Minton pieces and ordinary tableware. 1stDibs
