A spectacular and highly rare monument of the early 20th-century Arts & Crafts porcelain painting movement, this exceptional 12.75-inch cabinet charger represents a masterclass in Art Nouveau symmetry. Hand-painted onto a premium antique white Bavarian porcelain blank, this museum-quality statement piece is meticulously signed on the reverse by the noted artisan Emma I. Timlin and precisely dated August 14, 1913.
The centerpiece of this grand-scale plate is an extraordinarily modern, stylized interlocking medallion composed of a trio of three peacocks flanking back-to-back, executed in magnificent jewel-toned cerulean enamels. This central triskelion is framed by rich raised-paste gold gilding, delicate moriage-style texturing, and stylized peacock feather eyes.
The wide, undulating rim builds upon this theme, populated by four distinct pairs of mirrored blue peacocks alternated with lush, hand-enameled pink peonies, purple grapes, and heavy gilded berries. The outer edge is bordered by a continuous, geometric Art Nouveau heart-and-scroll band in coordinating turquoise and gold, highlighting the incredible patience and graphic precision characteristic of the elite early 1910s Keramic Studio guild aesthetic.
During the golden era of china painting (1890–1915), affluent studio guilds across North America imported blank porcelain from premier factories in the Bavaria region of Germany. These blanks served as fine canvases for top-tier decorative artists. Emma I. Timlin, whose curated border and pattern designs were published in the acclaimed Keramic Studio Magazine (the preeminent journal for fine amateur ceramicists of the period), has captured the ethereal, organic ethos of the late Art Nouveau period perfectly on this plate.
Given its monumental 12.75-inch diameter and shallow 1.25-inch depth, this versatile piece functions flawlessly as an opulent table charger, a mantel display centerpiece, or a striking fine-art wall hanging in an eclectic, Chinoiserie, or maximalist interior.
