Exceptional 20-piece Victorian English sterling silver fish service, comprising ten fish knives and ten matching fish forks, made by John Kilpatrick of London and bearing London sterling hallmarks dating the service to 1879.
The service is fashioned in the classic Victorian Fiddle pattern, with solid sterling silver handles characterized by their graceful, violin-like form and crisp molded borders. The handles are fully sterling giving the service a particularly cohesive and substantial appearance.
The fish forks are especially distinctive, featuring broad, flattened tines and a pierced heart-shaped opening below the central tines, a specialized form intended for handling delicate fish. The forks are further embellished with finely executed bright cut floral and foliate decoration, including stylized roses, leaves and geometric detailing characteristic of late-Victorian silver.
The accompanying fish knives have broad, elongated blades designed specifically for separating and serving fish, completing this elegant service intended for the formal Victorian dining table.
The reverse of the handles bears the complete sequence of London silver hallmarks, including the leopard’s head for the London Assay Office, lion passant confirming sterling silver, the 1879 date letter, and the registered JK maker’s mark of John Kilpatrick.
Accompanying the service is historical information about John Kilpatrick and his career as a silversmith, reproduced from a published reference book. This material will be provided to the purchaser and offers additional historical context concerning the maker of the service.
The service is free of monograms or personalized initials, preserving the original appearance of the pieces.
A particularly desirable feature is the complete service for ten, 20 pieces in total, a configuration that is increasingly difficult to find in Victorian sterling silver.
Very good antique condition, consistent with age and use. The pieces exhibit very minor surface marks and other signs of use appropriate to their age. The decorative details remain crisp and attractive. The service has been very well preserved for its age.
