The frame is particularly striking for its layered construction. A broad raised outer border displays repeating classical foliate decoration, followed by a smooth recessed gilt molding, a second finely detailed repeating foliate band, and a smooth inner gilt liner surrounding the artwork opening. Together, the alternating ornamental and smooth moldings create exceptional depth and dimension.

The warm aged gold finish highlights the relief of the decoration and gives the frame an elegant antique presence. Its substantial 2-inch-deep profile makes it equally attractive displayed horizontally or vertically.

Constructed of wood with applied decorative composition/gesso elements and a gilt-toned finish. Based on its construction, decorative vocabulary and aged materials, the frame is believed to date to the early 20th century, approximately 1900-1920.

The frame is currently fitted with hanging wire for horizontal display. It could be used for a painting, portrait, print or other artwork, or professionally fitted with mirror glass for use as a decorative wall mirror.

CONDITION:

Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear to the gilt finish and scattered minor surface marks, rubbing and small areas of loss consistent with age and use.
