This antique Copeland Spode covered vegetable tureen and matching presentation platter features the highly coveted "Chelsea" bird design. Intricately decorated with hand-colored transferware depicting exotic birds of paradise amidst vibrant peonies and foliage, the tureen is topped with its iconic molded green finial.
This specific set is an incredibly rare find for collectors due to its dual authentication markings on the underbelly:
1. Harrods Provenance: Stamped with a custom retail mark reading "Exclusive to Harrods, Knightsbridge, London S.W.1," indicating it was part of a premium commission for the world's premier luxury department store.
2. First-Year Pressing: Features the British design registration number Rd No. 568949 (registered in 1910) alongside the rare, impressed factory code "N10," dating its exact production to November 1910.
The tureen also bears hand-painted red artisan guild numbers (6171), showcasing the manual craftsmanship involved in finishing the vibrant glaze accents. A stunning centerpiece for any traditional, Grandmillennial, or Chinoiserie-inspired dining space.
What is not to love? The pattern is gorgeous, the colors are amazing, the finial is a unique touch and the shape and size are perfect.
