Maxwell Caulfield, 1982, Gelatin Silver Photograph by Greg Gorman
An arresting rarely encountered black-and-white portrait of actor Maxwell Caulfield by celebrated Los Angeles photographer Greg Gorman. Caulfield reclines shirtless in dark sunglasses, holding a magazine beside a telephone—a casually glamorous composition that captures the sensuality and distinctive atmosphere of early 1980s Hollywood.
The 11 × 14-inch gelatin silver print bears the photographer’s copyright stamp, “© GREG GORMAN 1982,” on the reverse. It is unnumbered.
This photograph comes from Greg Gorman’s poolside portrait session with Maxwell Caulfield, with images from the shoot appearing in the March 1982 issue of Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine, accompanying Caulfield’s interview with Tab Hunter.
Caulfield holds a meaningful place in Gorman’s early career. While working as a BTS photographer on *Grease 2* in 1982, Gorman’s access to the young actor led to the Interview portrait commission. Gorman identifies that opportunity as an important step in establishing his editorial reputation.
Gorman is a defining figure in contemporary portrait photography, recognized for his expressive use of light, sculptural compositions, and intimate portrayals of actors, musicians, and artists. His work bridges fine art, fashion, and Hollywood imagery, placing him alongside Herb Ritts and Helmut Newton within the influential Los Angeles photographic tradition.
Presented in a silver-tone frame with a neutral mat.
ABOUT
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1949, Gorman studied photojournalism at the University of Kansas and earned an MFA in Cinematography from the University of Southern California in 1972. His photographic beginnings included photographing Jimi Hendrix in 1968, followed by a career in Los Angeles portraiture, music photography, and motion-picture publicity.
His work for Interview and the long-running l.a.Eyeworks portrait campaign helped establish his distinctive photographic voice. Film assignments included imagery for Tootsie, The Big Chill, and Scarface.
