Made of warm aged wood with a dark corrugated zinc metal washing surface, this smaller-format lingerie washboard was designed for washing delicate garments.
The original advertising graphics remain visible across the wooden header, including “THE ZINC KING,” “LINGERIE,” “DO NOT RUB HARD” and the wonderfully period instruction “THE BOARD WILL DO THE WORK.” Comparable examples identify this design as the National Washboard Co. No. 703, made in the USA. Etsy
The naturally aged wooden frame, darkened zinc scrubbing surface, worn lettering and decades of patina give this piece particularly appealing primitive country character. Rather than looking restored, it retains the authentic wear expected from an old utilitarian household object.
Originally produced as a lingerie washboard for fine fabrics and delicate clothing, it is now a highly decorative piece of vintage laundry room decor, American advertising memorabilia and farmhouse wall decor. It would look especially good displayed in a laundry room, mudroom, farmhouse kitchen, country kitchen, bathroom, pantry, general store display or collection of vintage household implements.
A great accent for Americana, Primitive, Farmhouse, Rustic, Country, Cottage, Cottagecore, Granny Chic, Folk Art, Industrial, Shabby Chic and American Country interiors. It can be displayed as vintage wall art, antique laundry decor, primitive wall decor, farmhouse advertising, country store decor, galvanized metal decor or an American household collectible.
The combination of aged natural wood, corrugated zinc, original typography and advertising graphics gives this old washboard considerably more decorative character than a plain unmarked example.
