Early 20th-century salesman sample of the Frantz Premier electric vacuum cleaner, commonly known as the "Broomstick," manufactured by the Premier Vacuum Cleaner Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. The compact demonstration model features a long wood handle, metal cleaner head and housing, and fabric dust bag, closely replicating the construction of the full-size household appliance.
The Premier was developed from the early vacuum cleaner designs of James B. Kirby, whose work with the Frantz brothers helped establish the lightweight motor-driven cleaner with a dust bag and upright handle. This miniature example was intended for sales and demonstration purposes and represents an early stage in the development of portable electric household vacuum cleaners.
