A handsome 19th-century French Directoire style walnut side chair, featuring a tall rectangular back with an elegant pierced and carved fan-form splat. The crest rail and front seat rail are embellished with restrained carved reeded decoration characteristic of the Directoire aesthetic.
The chair is raised on slender tapered front legs with molded details and gently curved saber-form rear legs. The walnut frame retains a warm, attractive patina highlighting the clean architectural lines and refined proportions.
The generously padded seat has been recently reupholstered in a red, blue and cream plaid fabric, providing a fresh contrast to the antique walnut frame.
