Finely engraved and wonderfully graphic, this 1804 copper engraving was published in the Pisces volume of George Shaw’s (1751–1813) General Zoology, or Systematic Natural History, an ambitious multi-volume effort to organize the animal kingdom for early nineteenth-century readers. The plate pairs the Tuberculated Ray and Eglantine Ray as comparative zoological subjects; their historical names are now commonly associated with the thornback ray and clearnose skate.
Its compact scale and crisp monochrome linework give it an especially handsome nautical and natural-history presence. Approx. 5.25 W × 8.25 H in.
