An impressive pair of Italian carved wooden angel candelabra or torchères, dating to the late 16th to early 17th century. Each standing angel is depicted in flowing classical drapery and supports a tall, elaborately carved torch-form candleholder.
The figures display finely modeled faces with deeply carved curling hair and substantial drapery, standing upon architectural bases decorated in relief with winged cherub heads. The surfaces retain a rich, naturally aged brown patina with traces of earlier surface treatment.
Torch-bearing angels of this type formed part of Italian ecclesiastical furnishings and were traditionally positioned near altars and other devotional settings.
