The lid and base are solid brass and feature deeply incised scenes depicting figures in period dress, animals, and pastoral elements, accompanied by flowing Dutch script in cursive hand—likely a humorous or moralizing poem, a common tradition in Dutch folk art of the era. The box's sides are constructed from copper toned material and engraved with stylized leaf and line motifs, adding texture and contrast to the polished brass toned top.
This box was likely handmade for personal use, either for carrying snuff or tobacco, and would have served both a practical and decorative purpose. The hinged lid remains functional and opens to reveal an unlined interior with a warm, aged patina. These boxes were often gifted or commemorative, and each engraving was typically uniquel, making this a rare example of vernacular Dutch metalworks.
The craftsmanship, material contrast, and engraved storytelling suggest this piece was not mass-produced but rather the work of a skilled artisan, likely dating from the mid-to-late 1700s. It remains in very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear, minor surface abrasions, and a few subtle tool marks consistent with handwork.Very good antique condition. Surface wear and oxidation consistent with age; hinge operates smoothly and lid closes securely. Engraving remains sharp and legible.
Vintage condition as pictured.
