Early 19th-century American Empire bow-front chest of drawers, circa 1830, with richly figured mahogany veneer, four graduated drawers, reeded corner stiles, bone and brass diamond-form keyhole escutcheons and distinctive Empire-period shaped bracket feet.
The beautifully figured drawer fronts create a dramatic façade, while turned wooden knobs and small diamond-form escutcheons add restrained period detail. Reeded corner stiles frame the bowed case and lead to the chest’s especially appealing feet.
This chest reflects the transition from late Federal design into the heavier American Classical and Empire taste of the second quarter of the 19th century. Period construction is visible at the back and within the drawers, while the surface retains the variations, wear and warm patina expected of a chest approaching two centuries of age.
A handsome and practical antique with generous storage, well suited to a bedroom, guest room, entry hall or living room.
JUNE’S THOUGHTS
There are so many things I like about this chest—the beautifully figured mahogany veneer, the little diamond-shaped keyhole escutcheons, and the wonderful patina that comes only with age. But it is the feet that really caught my attention. I’ve seen many early American mahogany chests over the years, and these unusual shaped ogee bracket feet give this one a personality all its own. It’s exactly the kind of detail I look for in an antique—something that makes a familiar form feel special.
