This pair of vintage mid-century modern Wassily lounge chairs designed by Marcel Breuer and labeled Stendig were produced during the 1960s. Originally designed in 1925 while Breuer was at the Bauhaus, the Model B3, later known as the “Wassily” chair, was among the earliest and most influential uses of tubular steel in modern furniture design. The chair reinterprets the traditional club chair as an open, architectural framework of intersecting lines and suspended planes.
This vintage pair features classic construction with continuous polished chrome-plated tubular steel frames and individual dark brown leather hide panels comprising the seats, backs and arms, creating the distinctive open construction of the Wassily chair. During the 1960s, Stendig was the exclusive U.S. distributor of Marcel Breuer’s furniture, including the Wassily chair. Both chairs retain labels to the frames that read: “Original Design, Stendig, Made in Finland”.
