This is a vintage Brighton Pavilion-style armchair crafted of natural bamboo with a warm tortoiseshell or scorched finish and a woven cane seat. Dating to approximately the 1960s–1970s, the chair reflects the Chinoiserie influence of the bamboo furnishings associated with England’s Brighton Pavilion.
The unusually decorative frame features a graceful rounded horseshoe-form back flowing into the arms, an architectural central back panel with slender bamboo spindles, and elaborate hand-formed loop and geometric fretwork throughout the back and sides. Additional bamboo fretwork beneath the seat and a stretcher base give the chair visual interest from every angle.
The bamboo has winderful variation in color and surface, with the darker markings characteristic of a tortoiseshell or scorched finish. The woven cane seat is intact and complements the open, airy construction beautifully.
A striking accent chair equally at home in Chinoiserie, British Colonial, Palm Beach, coastal, Hollywood Regency or collected traditional interiors.
