Qing Dynasty Martaban-type Glazed Earthenware Storage Jar, circa 1880-1920. This vessel has a tall, gently tapering body with rounded shoulders. The upper portion of this jar features a series of applied floral and rosette medallions, interspersed with small loop handles or lugs. Raised twist-rope bands encircle the vessel at the shoulder and lower body, visually dividing the surface into decorative parts. The multiple loop handles were traditionally practical as well as decorative, allowing large storage vessels to be secured with cords or transported more easily. Large glazed storage jars were among the great utilitarian ceramics of Asian maritime trade. For centuries, they were transported aboard ships throughout China and Southeast Asia serving as both containers and valuable trade goods. Their thick ceramic bodies and glazed interiors made them useful for storing and transporting commodities such as water, wine, oils, preserved foods and grains. After reaching their destination, these durable vessels were often reused for everyday storage.
In modern interiors, this 31 inch tall jar is large enough to to function as a stand-alone piece of floor pottery. It will be ideal in an entryway or foyer, beside a console, at the end of a hallway, or in an empty corner. The rich amber-brown glaze will provide wonderful warmth and texture to any room. For a dramatic look, the nine inch wide mouth of this vessel is perfect to hold tall dried branches, bamboo, palm stems, or any oversized foliage. This Asian jar would be a nice addition to a Coastal, Mediterranean, Asian-Inspired, Rustic Modern, or Eclectic interior.
