Its generous proportions and high, shaped back give the chair an imposing yet graceful presence, while the warm honey-brown tone of the walnut provides a rich ground for the painted ornament.
The back is especially striking. An oval caned panel is framed by delicate trailing foliage and floral decoration, culminating in a central painted reserve depicting a romantic pastoral scene with figures in a wooded landscape. This pictorial medallion forms the focal point of the chair and lends it an almost jewel-like quality. The surrounding cane work introduces lightness and transparency, contrasting beautifully with the solid carved and painted framework.
Further stencil and hand-painted decoration appears throughout the chair. Stylised leaves, flowers, garlands, and classical motifs embellish the arms, front rail, corner blocks, and slender turned legs. Particularly attractive is the dark green central panel to the seat rail, decorated with a graceful foliate device. These touches reflect the late Victorian and Edwardian fascination with historic revival styles, decorative painting, and refined domestic furniture.
The enclosed caned sides curve gently into the arms, creating a comfortable, almost bergère-like form. A loose cream upholstered cushion softens the seat while allowing the craftsmanship of the frame to remain prominent.
