HOUSES IN THE SNOW
Size: 27.2 x 29.1 inches (including frame)
Oil on canvas
A characterful mid-century modernist style street scene depicting a close grouping of houses beneath a pale yellow winter sky, executed in oil onto canvas by the established Finnish artist Paavo Airola (1918 – 1983), who’s works have been represented at the National Gallery in Stockholm, Örebro Museum of Fine Art, Jämtland Museum, Hudiksvall Museum, Östersund, and others.
The buildings overlap and recede into one another, their steeply pitched roofs, chimneys and irregular facades creating a strong architectural rhythm. Patches of snow settle between the houses and across the foreground, giving the composition a distinctly quiet, wintry atmosphere.
Painted in a modernist, semi-abstract style, the artist has simplified the architecture into broad geometric planes, allowing shape and colour to take precedence over fine detail. The slightly skewed perspectives and tightly compressed arrangement of the buildings lend the scene an expressive quality, while the absence of figures heightens its sense of stillness.
The palette is wonderfully restrained, combining deep aubergine, charcoal, brick red, muted olive, and soft grey. These darker architectural tones are offset by areas of powder blue and chalky white snow, all set beneath a hazy pale yellow-green sky that gives the painting an unusual luminosity.
Brushwork is loose, dry and textural, with areas of the canvas weave remaining visible beneath the paint. Edges are deliberately softened and occasionally broken, giving the buildings a wonderfully painterly quality. Rather than precisely delineating each structure, the artist uses blocks of colour and confident angular strokes to suggest roofs, walls, windows and shadows.
This oil on canvas is presented in a beautiful wood frame with an inner cream border. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
