FIGURES AT THE WINDOW
Oil on board
Size: 26.4 x 22.8 inches (including frame)
A wonderfully expressive mid-century figurative painting depicting two figures gathered beside a large window, beyond which a loosely rendered urban landscape unfolds, executed in oil onto board.
One figure perches on the windowsill, elongated and angular, while the other sits below with a knee drawn towards the body. Their relaxed poses and proximity suggest a quiet familiarity, yet their inward expressions lend the scene a contemplative, slightly enigmatic quality.
The painting has a distinctly modernist sensibility, with the figures simplified into strong, sculptural forms and the surrounding interior flattened into broad planes of colour. Perspective is deliberately loose, allowing the figures, window and distant architecture to overlap and merge. The bare branches of the tree beyond the window provide a particularly expressive counterpoint, their dark, gestural lines echoing the angularity of the figures.
The palette is rich and earthy, combining browns, rust, burnt orange and deep burgundy with cooler passages of cobalt, slate blue, teal and soft green. A pale peach sky brings warmth and light to the upper composition, while the saturated yellows and blues of the interior give the painting an energetic quality.
Brushwork is confident and highly visible throughout. Broad, dry strokes build up the background and furnishings, while darker, more assertive marks define the figures and tree. Areas of colour are layered rather than smoothly blended, allowing glimpses of underlying tones to remain visible and giving the surface a wonderfully tactile, painterly character. The loosely articulated faces are especially compelling, constructed through small, angular strokes of ochre, red, blue and brown rather than precise detail.
This oil on board is presented in a complementary layered natural wood frame with a stepped profile. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
