Designed and executed in Brazil during the 1950s by Pierre Weckx, this rare chaise lounge exemplifies the organic modern movement that shaped Latin American design in the postwar period. Characterized by fluid lines, ergonomic intent, and expressive materiality, the movement sought to humanize modern interiors through forms inspired by the body and the natural world.
The chaise is constructed in richly figured caviúna wood, combined with hand-woven rope and a newly upholstered, continuous channeled cushion secured directly to the frame with fabric ties. Its elongated, aerodynamic profile creates a compelling sense of motion and visual lightness, while the gently inclined seat and back invite relaxation and repose. Wood, rope, and upholstery operate together as a unified structural system, reflecting the experimental spirit of Brazilian design studios during the 1950s.
The cushion is upholstered in a deep moss-olive mohair velvet, selected for its tactile richness, durability, and restrained luminosity. Its dense, compact pile has a soft directional nap that subtly shifts with the light, revealing nuanced tones of moss, olive, and muted sage. The earthy color was chosen to complement the reddish-brown undertones and dramatic grain of the caviúna without competing with the sculptural frame. It also reinforces the chaise’s connection to the organic modern tradition, lending the piece a natural, grounded quality while preserving its sophistication.
The upholstery follows the chaise’s sweeping profile through a sequence of softly crowned horizontal channels. Each section is generously padded yet carefully tailored, creating a plush and supportive surface without diminishing the lightness of the structure. Clean seams and gently rounded edges articulate the cushion’s rhythm, while the visible ties honor the original construction and emphasize the dialogue between textile, rope, and wood.
Though Pierre Weckx remains relatively undocumented, his work appeared in prominent period publications, including House & Garden Brazil, situating him within the broader cultural exchange fostered by European émigré designers arriving in Brazil during that decade. These designers played a critical role in expanding Brazilian modernism beyond strict rationalism toward increasingly organic, tactile, and expressive forms.
The caviúna frame has been expertly refinished by one of Brazil’s leading restorers, revealing the depth, warmth, and natural movement of the grain. The rope and cushion are new and were executed with sensitivity to the chaise’s original construction and design intent. Surviving examples of Weckx’s furniture are notably scarce, making this chaise an exceptional and highly collectible work—sculptural, functional, and historically significant.
