An Italian ‘Bastiano’ lounge chair designed by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Gavina in the 1960s. Upholstered in rich black leather, the generous seat and back cushions rest freely within a constructed wooden frame, a homage to Le Corbusier’s “free cushion” concept, here translated from tubular steel into warm, solid wood.
The structure is defined by broad horizontal rails and substantial vertical supports, its clean lines forming a precise geometric outline around the soft, deeply comfortable cushions. The leather displays a gentle sheen and natural creasing, enhancing the tactile contrast between supple upholstery and the smooth, dark-stained timber.
The chair’s low-slung stance and inviting proportions make it equally suited to a lounge or study.
